****Apple Announces Mail-Order Catalog 09/16/92
CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A., 1992 SEP 16 (NB) -- In a teleconference today,
Apple USA announced that it will begin direct mail-order sales to end users
via The Apple Catalog, set for initial release in mid-October. The catalog
will feature Apple products, accessories, supplies, peripherals, and
third-party products. Mike Dionne, senior vice president, Apple USA marketing
operations, said at the teleconference, that: "The Apple catalog will be
mailed to a little over a million customers. (There names) ....coming from
our warranty registration cards that have been returned on products. So it is
an installed-base program. The catalog will carry about 450 items." Apple said
that updated versions of the catalog are set for release every 13 weeks. Bob
Puette, president of Apple USA, said: "Because some of these products can be
hard to find in the marketplace, many of our customers have requested mail
order for the convenience of being able to order product 24-hours a day, seven
days a week, directly from Apple." In addition to accessories, scanners,
modems, non-network printers, and selected Macintosh products such as the
PowerBook 145, the first catalog will also include complimentary third- party
products from Claris, Aldus, and Kensington. All Apple products will be
offered at the company's suggested retail price, presumably to avoid
undercutting Apple's normal reselling channels. Said Dionne, at the
teleconference: "We are looking to further expand third-party products as they
compliment the product line on a 'solutions' basis, which is really the focus
of the catalog." In terms of the target market, Dionne said: "We will be going
after incremental business. We want to make sure that we reach customers that
may feel more comfortable shopping out of the catalog, or may not have an
authorized Apple Reseller nearby." Speaking of where the catalog fits in with
Apple's other channels, he said: "We believe that the catalog will compliment
the reseller channel, in that it is products listed at full suggested retail
price. It is typically hard-to-access products, like accessories, toner
cartridges, connectors, and those peripherals that may not be stocked at all
reseller locations. Convenience is the key." Maureen Loeb, manager of Catalog
Sales for Apple USA, said: "In addition to giving users a convenient
purchasing vehicle, The Apple Catalog is a terrific way to heighten customers'
direct access to Apple. We'll gain invaluable feedback and input to create
programs, services and products that specifically meet our customer's needs.
We'll be able to extend our reach and improve customer service with the
convenience the catalog offers." A toll-free catalog order number can be used
for ordering. Fax and general mail orders will also be accepted. All catalog
orders have to be pre-paid, either with a check or credit card. Products from
the catalog will come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. The company is
aiming for a next-day turn-around on order received by 12 midnight, Eastern
time. For products weighing less than 20 pounds, overnight freight will be
included at no extra charge. Oversized products will be shipped surface mail
at no charge. Toll-free telephone support is provided direct from Apple for
one-year on all Apple products. The company will also provide assistance on
installation and set-up, configuration, basic product use, and compatibility.
Standard Apple warranties will apply on all Apple products bought through the
catalog.
